Many improvements were made to this specialized quad a few years ago, including a new clutch and revised air intake system, which should keep the YFZ450R the dominant platform on the racetrack. While many manufacturers have let this class of ATV down, the folks at Yamaha have stayed true to their competition genetics and continued to improve their much-respected YFZ450R in the racing world.
The YFZ now offers a more powerful, fuel-injected, 450-class type YZ engine running at optimum rpm. Constantly reading engine parameters to ensure optimum fuel delivery, the Yamaha fuel injection system works with a 12-hole injector for optimum combustion and power output. ISC idle speed control and large 42mm Mikuni throttle body contribute to effortless starts.
High-rpm power and response have also been improved through modifications to the exhaust system, camshaft profile, compression ratio, and throttle valve angle. Its compression ratio increased with a longer pushrod and a more robust lower crankshaft rod. Changes to the fuel injection system mapping, optimizing fuel injection volume under deceleration, deliver around 10% lower fuel consumption than the old model without sacrificing engine performance. The new muffler features an air induction system that introduces clean air to the exhaust port to burn off unconsumed hydrocarbons, making it EPA/LA CARB-4 mode emissions compliant.
Be aware that the YFZ 450 is not a touring quad, and owning it entails a much tighter and more frequent mechanical follow-up and maintenance schedule than a Raptor 700, for example. On the other hand, you will get an incredibly great machine for competition thanks to the all-aluminum structure, the optimized powertrain, the efficient suspension with KYB gas-charged piggyback shock absorbers, and many other Yamaha special features.
