The name Wolverine evokes the ferocity of which this mammal, the wolverine, is capable. So we expect to be dealing with a spicier vehicle than the Viking. This year, Yamaha is bolting the 1000cc engine of the big brother RMAX to the Wolverine X2 versions. It completes the offer of the 850 cm3 twin-cylinder engine, which is not without interest. The 850 offers a very quiet operation. It is, by far, one of the quietest gas-powered SUVs on the market today. The torque of the 850 engine gives the Wolverine a good power curve for recreational UTVs. However, the punch of the 108 horsepower of the 1000 cm3 engine makes the vehicle more dynamic and allows you to drive on forest roads without always pushing the engine to the max. In our opinion, equipped with this 1000 cc engine, the Wolverine X2 1000 is one of the most interesting on the market.
There’s always power available when necessary, it works well on technical trails, and the power delivery is near perfect. Well served by the indestructible Ultramatic CVT transmission, the engine always seems at ease as soon as we press the throttle pedal, and as soon as we release it we have powerful engine braking. The transmission’s low range allows you to descend steep grades and never touch the brakes, allowing you to concentrate on steering and riding. Yamaha designed the machine with superb, precise, and light steering that keeps the rider’s confidence. Yamaha’s proven power steering system and amazing engine braking system allow the Wolverine to be driven for long periods without fatigue.
High-back bucket seats keep you in place, letting you enjoy the vehicle’s full potential. Also, the Wolverine has seen its roll cage revised; that helps to get in and out of the cabin. The side doors were also redesigned.
The X4
Above all, don’t think that the Wolverine X4 is just a Wolverine to which we added two other seats in the back. These seats have folding bucket seats that offer the same comfort as those up front, but legroom is at a premium due to the engine cover that sits between the seats. It takes away some of the floor space.
The vehicle also features a self-leveling rear suspension that instantly adjusts for additional rear passenger or cargo weight. So the Wolverine X4 retains the proper ride height and suspension.
