You need the aggressive and intimidating power of the Outlander X mr to go through deep mud, but you also want the surprising speed of the Renegade? Feast your eyes on the Renegade X mr 1000R, Can-Am’s most powerful hybrid/sport ATV, built to dominate any terrain, especially the nastiest mud pits around.

Can-Am has enjoyed great success with the Outlander 1000 X mr and has decided to apply the winning formula to the entire range (which its eternal rival, Polaris, also did). The Renegade 1000R was given a protruding snorkel to house the air intakes of the engine, the transmission, and the vent holes for the two differentials. The sharp lines of the hood are enhanced by an impressive, tubular bumper that slopes down towards the 3,000 lbs. winch (with no remote control, unfortunately). Next, Can-Am added 30-inch ITP Cryptid tires, exclusive aluminum rims, Fox QS3 gas suspension at all four corners, aluminum skid plates on the underside, wrap around handguards, and tri-mode power steering. The radiator is still under the fenders, but it should be noted that it is still relatively sheltered, nestled up high behind the grille.

This quad can sustain a limited top speed, electronically limited at 100 km/h, on forest trails, however, above 70 km/h, the instability of the quad on its big tires starts to become noticeable.  All the same, the Fox shocks admirably control body motion. The rider gains confidence in the way the vehicle behaves, as it always responds in the same way and, at the most, the quad will start to slide a little on all four wheels. The rider comes out of the turn by drawing on the reserves of the engine to begin oversteering. Is the ‘Gade X mr 1000 viable for trail riding? Yes, absolutely. But you’d better know what you’re doing. It can be a handful.

If you don’t want or need the raw power of the 1000R, the good news is that you can get the essentials for the mud in the Renegade X mr 650, which is much more affordable. You’ll have half the power, one less winch, somewhat smaller tires, and a slightly simpler suspension set up, but $4,200 more in your wallet.

The Can-Am Renegade X mr 1000 was fun to drive during our tests. It was surprisingly capable in a lot of other areas other than overcoming quagmires, including decent handling on trails. It has a very strong personality that will make you want one for sure.

WHAT’S NEW?

  • New colors.

We appreciate :

  • The balance of riding between comfort and performance in the mud. Despite its transformations, the vehicle holds its own on the trail.

We dislike:

  • The radiator doesn’t seem too affected by the mud, but it’s still quite exposed in a handlebar immersion.
