Can-Am decided to expand its Outlander line, initially designed for the Scandinavian market, by focusing on the utility quad niche in North America. To do this, it created a quad equipped with 6 wheels and a tilting cargo bed made of polyethylene. As a vehicle aimed at farmers, forestry workers, hunters and outdoorsmen, the raw performance, or wall-to-wall sophistication of the quad is not the desired end goal. Potential customers are looking for a versatile, sturdy and durable machine that will be able to get them problem-free into the woods with their equipment.
With an 82-inch wheelbase and a net mass of 1,139 lbs., the Outlander 6×6 is a colossus that is even more impressive than the Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR. Be aware that the end of the ATV will stick out the back of a 4×8 ft. trailer. Its wheelbase is more than 23 inches longer than the regular MAX version, giving Can-Am all the space needed to install a good-sized tilting cargo bed. This unique box includes two levels of storage for a total cargo capacity of 318 kg (700 lbs.). The optional accessories offered, such as a cargo bed cover, log bars, extendible tailgate, etc., make it even more practical. You just need to pull a few pegs to create a platform in a few seconds. Lastly, care was taken to include a 70-litre drawer under the floor of the cargo bed that’s big enough to stow a power saw or other gear.
The 6×6 is offered in the XT trim, with a 1,000-class, 82HP Rotax engine, or in the standard version with a 650cc, 62HP Rotax engine. Both versions come with power steering, which is essential on this model, as the steering is very heavy. The 976cc, two-cylinder, V-Twin, fuel-injected and liquid-cooled engine in the 1,000 is powerful enough to kid into the corners, even with the four big tires at the back, but you’ll have to really want it. With either engine, you’ll have 1,650 lbs. of towing capacity thanks to the traction created by all six tires pulling in unison.
According to Can-Am, the vehicle was also designed for comfort and fun when riding. Indeed, the comfort experienced when riding this ATV is remarkable. Despite the limited travel of the suspension, the two rear axles literally erase all the surface obstacles on the trail: rocks, roots, or cracks. The ride is plush for sure. Combined with the renowned comfort of the driver’s seat on the Outlanders, this vehicle will provide great comfort overall during long rides for days at a time without causing excessive fatigue.
WHAT’S NEW?
Nothing for 2025.
We appreciate :
- The work force deployed by the 6x6s of Can-Am, in particular by the 6×6 XT 1000 which can also make room for leisure.
- The versatility of the skip with its storage drawer and the possibility of having different configurations: skip, platform, sides, etc.
We dislike:
- The absence of an unlockable rear differential (Turf Mode) to protect the lawn.
