During a special invitation to Wyoming, we had the opportunity to test the Smart-Shox suspension for ATVs. The test vehicle was none other than the 2026 Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R, much to our delight. The manufacturer continues to raise the bar for performance ATVs. This technology, already available on snowmobiles and side-by-side vehicles, is now available on ATVs.

This highly sophisticated semi-active suspension meets the expectations of riders seeking a combination of comfort, agility, control, and performance. It is not just a technical addition. It truly transforms the way the Outlander interacts with the terrain. Here are our impressions of this new feature.

How it works

Basically, the Smart-Shox suspension is electronically controlled and semi-active. Unlike traditional passive shock absorbers (with fixed settings), Smart-Shox continuously adjusts the firmness of the shock absorbers in real time using a set of sensors and an advanced electronic controller.

In practical terms, the system continuously monitors the position of the wheel and the compression and extension speed of each shock absorber, as well as other dynamic parameters. It can make up to 200 adjustments per second, reacting to every bump, turn, or change in surface in a fraction of a second. This reduces unwanted oscillations, mitigates brake dive, limits squat during acceleration, and keeps the vehicle base more stable and balanced.

The Smart-Shox suspension offers several driving modes: Work, Comfort, Normal, and Sport. The driver can select the mode according to the intended use, from a relaxing and comfortable ride to a more sporty drive with a firmer suspension.

Although electronic, this system does not replace the Outlander’s wishbones and essential suspension geometry. However, it drastically optimizes the response of the KYB shock absorbers fitted to the XT-P version.

Integration into the 10.25″ screen

The 2026 Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R now offers a 10.25″ touchscreen when you opt for Smart-Shox technology. This modern screen is not just for displaying information such as speed or navigation. It also serves as an interface for viewing and adjusting suspension settings directly from the cockpit. Thanks to an intuitive interface, you can select your Smart-Shox calibration modes. Selection is super easy with your finger on the 10.25-inch touchscreen or using the handlebar controls.

In short, rather than being a separate feature or a series of discreet buttons, the Smart-Shox suspension is deeply connected to the Outlander’s digital and visual ecosystem. This makes it easy to use and maximizes its effectiveness.

Driving impressions

On the road, the difference made by the Smart-Shox suspension is immediately noticeable to anyone accustomed to conventional suspensions. It’s safe to say that overall comfort is enhanced. The system absorbs bumps better, even at medium speeds, which reduces driver fatigue on long days.

We also note that stability is improved in corners or during quick changes of direction. The Outlander remains more “grounded,” reducing front dive and roll in corners. This means that wheel bounce is better controlled, which stabilizes the vehicle on its trajectory. Traction is also optimized. By continuously adjusting the firmness of the shock absorbers, the wheels maintain better contact with the ground. This helps you get out of technical sections or attack trails with confidence at a good pace.

In addition, you can feel a dynamic response during sudden braking or acceleration. The suspension reacts quickly enough to provide a feeling of increased control.

Unanimous verdict from the media present at the event

Although some configurations may still depend on personal preferences… Some riders will prefer comfort, while others will be more performance-oriented. In any case, the Smart-Shox suspension tends to make the ATV more versatile and less demanding to drive. Whether for leisurely rides or more challenging outings, we see nothing but advantages. The only downside is the additional cost of purchasing it! And we can bet that future maintenance and repairs will be in the same order of magnitude.

Conclusion

In summary, Smart-Shox suspension for ATVs represents a significant evolution. Its ability to automatically adjust the firmness or softness of the shock absorbers in real time provides superior comfort. We also noticed improved stability and more confident handling, regardless of the conditions.

The touchscreen integration makes it intuitive and modern to use, transforming what is usually a complex adjustment into an intuitive and enhanced experience for the rider. It is designed for riders who want to push the limits or simply want a more refined and comfortable ride. The Smart-Shox suspension is an addition that truly changes the driving experience of the Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R.
