2025 Polaris Sportsman 850

After a one-year absence, the Sportsman Highlifters are back in the deepmud arena.   Polaris engineers have transformed the Sportsman’s platform into a true mud racing champion. Designing a mud machine is not just about installing big tires and putting on a snorkel, but also about a host of details that Polaris has thought of.

First of all, no compromise for the engines. The first is the 850cc which provides 78 horsepower and the second is the Prostar 1000 which provides 85 horsepower, but incredible torque. These mechanics are cooled by a radiator with two fans, all relocated to the hood. The CVT transmission is about 80 percent off the curve compared to a regular Sportsman, so you can grind the huge 29.5-inch High Lifter Outlaw 2 tires through the mud. This is also consistent with the suspension which is very effective at ensuring optimal traction in mud, but less so in handling. Indeed, the rear anti-roll bar has been removed, in order to allow the suspension to have the greatest possible amplitude and thus ensure maximum traction. But the ATV lies down more when driving fast on the trail. The springs are stiffer and the front and rear suspension tables adopt an arch shape in order to achieve the ground clearance of 13.5 inches. It offers an ultra-low ratio for mud-specific torque, and dual front and rear A-arms with constant radius and high arches, which maximize ground clearance by keeping the suspension out of ruts and mud. Sealed single-beam headlights and a sealed key switch help protect the electrical system from moisture and debris. No detail has been overlooked.

The High Lifter is an extremely competent machine in its environment, but you have to be aware that, outside of the mud hole, this vehicle has some shortcomings in trail handling. It’s a choice that the designer made. But it will satisfy you in its favorite element. With its mouflon shield front bumper, it displays a very strong personality that exudes testosterone.

Here’s what the 1000 version offer over the 850 version: center handlebar grip, painted plastics, power steering, 3500 lb winch, front and rear bumpers, aluminum wheels.

WHAT’S UP?

Nothing for 2025.

We appreciate:

  • Deep mud enthusiasts will love the ultimate crossing capabilities of both versions of the High Lifter.
  • The XP 1000 High Lifter’s solid bumper construction will stand up to all abuse, in addition to giving the vehicle a sheep-like look.

What we don’t like:

  • The lack of power steering on the 850 version.
  • The temperamental manners of the suspension may surprise a neophyte who is travelling at a good speed on a trail.
  • The $5,600 price difference between the two versions seems difficult to justify.
