Honda is returning to the world of large-displacement ATVs and has been offering the new Rubicon 700 since the end of 2024. Finally, new is an understatement, as it is in fact the return of the Rincon 680 in new livery.

Aesthetically, the new Honda styling standards suit the Rubicon 700 well. The lines suggest robustness. It should be noted that the quality of the assembly and the materials used do credit to Honda’s reputation in this area. The new and surprising look with its rounded shapes is more modern than the norm. It is not very powerful but it is enough, and the 38 HP it provides are perfectly balanced with its advanced features.

The engine is a large 675 cm3 single-cylinder with a four-valve cylinder head design and electronic fuel injection; it is mounted longitudinally, allowing direct alignment of the drive shaft to the front and rear wheels for improved transmission efficiency. The exact power output of the engine is not known, but the old Rincon 680 produced 38 HP, which is rather modest in the current market. The engine is powered by a PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system that includes a 40 mm throttle body for reliable cold-weather starts and consistent engine performance. It is mated to an automotive-style hydraulic transmission with three forward gears and one reverse gear.

The suspension is independent double wishbone at all four wheels, which suggests an acceptable level of comfort and better vehicle control. Note the absence of power steering, even as an option, which is unusual on a quad bike of this price. Also, the four-wheel drive system has a limited slip differential and cannot be manually locked for better traction.

When riding it, you feel that a good dose of power has been injected into the machine. The handling on the trail at good speed is very safe, particularly due to the low center of gravity. Bumps and jolts are swallowed up by the suspension, without equaling that of the top models in the category. Despite its firmness, the steering inspires great confidence. Firstly, because of the precision of its steering and the absence of any nasty kickback in the handlebars when the wheels hit ruts.

When driving in a peaceful mode, the engine delivers all the power needed as the gears shift quickly and smoothly. The engine works very well with the transmission and its torque makes up for the small number of gears. Still in peaceful mode, the gearbox downshifts and selects its gears without hesitation. In sportier mode, the gearbox becomes more hesitant.

Be aware that you will never have lightning acceleration that will stretch your arms like the big V-Twins will. But the abundant torque and the overall very sound behavior of the quad will allow you to maintain an appreciable average speed. What you remember most about the experience of driving a Rubicon 700 is how smoothly all the mechanical components operate. So you have to take the Rubicon 700 for what it is, i.e. a comfortable quad bike with legendary reliability that delivers the performance you would expect on a trail ride.

What’s new?

New model proposed at the end of 2024.

We like:

  • Good reliability expected
  • Modern presentation in line with Honda style standards
  • Consistent vehicle performance in touring situations

We like less:

  • The technical features on offer, although exclusive and with a contemporary appearance, are 20 years old.
  • If you want to work with this quad, look instead at the Foreman 520 or the Rubicon 520
