This is by far one of the most exciting models to ride. The Maverick R is Can-Am’s new high-performance flagship in the quad universe. In fact, BRP is taking it very seriously and has concocted a new thoroughbred to counter its eternal rival Polaris. Nothing has been left to chance to stay at the zenith of the ATV world.
The engine that powers the Maverick R is the Rotax 999T, a 999cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine that develops an electrifying 240 horsepower. To manage this power, it is mated to a new seven-speed DCT transmission with high and low speed ranges. A DCT, which is a BRP first, allows you to change gears in 0.2 seconds and keep power to the wheels without interruption to maintain stability and total control. The other advantage of the DCT box is the long-term resistance. As the vehicle was designed to frolic in the Gladis dunes or on the Baja 500 route, the dual-radiator cooling system will keep operating temperatures under control at ambient temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius.
Another distinguishing feature of this vehicle is the suspension. First of all, the overall width of the machine is 77 inches. It is the widest UTV ever released. Then there are the front control arms, which have a cast aluminum spindle that overhangs the wheel. The objective is to limit the toe-in of the front wheel when cornering. Although effective, this is quite singular in appearance. The suspension travel is also very long, at 25 inches front and rear. Thus suspended, the vehicle has an impressive ground clearance of 17 inches!
The shocks offered on the entry-level Maverick R are Fox 2.5 Podium with QS3 compression adjustment. While the extra-long-travel suspension is very efficient, Can-Am also offers the Smart-Shox Continuously Electronic Adjusting Suspension. It’s a fully self-tuning suspension that controls both compression and rebound for better steering precision. The rider will be able to adjust the settings of the shock absorbers from the instrument panel in three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport +.
By constantly monitoring the position of the wheels and the speed of the vehicle, the system acts on both compression and rebound and can go from full flexibility to full firmness in seventeen milliseconds (0.017 seconds). This will give you better contact with the ground. By constantly adjusting the suspension in real time, stability is improved, thereby increasing cornering and steering. Finally, comfort is improved by eliminating unwanted tailgating and bouncing.
The interior is designed to surround the driver and passenger who are seated in a low position. The wrap-around seats are adjustable in four directions. Depending on the version chosen, the steering wheel is height-adjustable and telescopic. In addition, it contains a host of controls and paddles at the rear to shift the gears of the sequential transmission. The optional infotainment system, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen LCD, will be able to display general vehicle information (speed, RPM), image from the front and rear cameras, navigation, Smart-Shox suspension adjustment and music management.
The Maverick R is available in four equipment levels and this year, in a 2-passenger or MAX four-passenger version. The entry-level R trim is not without its feet and is offered with Fox 2.5 Podium shocks with QS3 compression adjustment, 30-inch ITP Tenacity XNR tires, three-point retractable seat belt, cell phone storage.
The Maverick R X adds the Fox 2.5 Podium QS# Piggyback suspension, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, rear camera, telescoping steering wheel with infotainment controls, all-way roof, integral skid plates, four-point safety harness, high-performance LED headlamps and Can-Am signature LED.
The Maverick R X RS adds Fox 3.0 Podium RC2 piggyback shocks, 32-inch ITP Tenacity tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels, a front camera.
The Maverick R X RS with Smart-Shox adds the Smart-Shox suspension system.
The Maverick R range represents the pinnacle of sport ATVs on the planet at the moment and it is a privilege to be able to own such a machine for your own enjoyment. With great power comes great responsibility, and every Maverick R owner must carefully choose where to go and play with this powerful turbocharged treat.
WHAT’S UP?
- Introduction of the four-passenger MAX versions.
- New colors.
We appreciate:
- The Maverick R is BRP’s flagship ultra-high-performance UTV. It goes without saying that the vehicle’s performance is mind-boggling and will go even further with the introduction of the Smart-Shox active suspension.
What we don’t like:
- It is important to be aware that the performance and dimensions of this vehicle are not adequate to travel in an organized ATV trail network.
