This more compact two-seater vehicle is the entry-level version of Honda’s UTV family. It has been updated this year, including the engine and the dump body. Despite its simplistic solutions for cutting costs, the Pioneer 520 can make its way wherever you want, for a long weekend of fun and revitalizing experiences out in nature.
Honda may have sacrificed some functionality in the vehicle’s redesign, but absolutely nothing in the inherent quality or reliability. The engine that powers the Pioneer 520 is the proven high-torque Honda 518cc engine. In addition to seeing its cubic capacity increased, the engine mapping has been revised to make it run smoother. It is mated to a five-speed electric shift transmission with reverse, operated by paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. You would think the paddle shifters add a sporty feel to the Pioneer 520’s drive, but sadly you will need more than that to whip the little horse under the hood. In fact, the vehicle’s top speed is 50 km/h, which can be a problem when riding in a group. A dash-mounted lever lets you quickly engage the 2WD / 4WD system under challenging conditions but lacks the possibility of locking the front differential. There is no adjustment of the front shocks either. However, the vehicle’s handling is excellent overall.
Honda’s popular ESP (Electric Shift Program) transmission is robust, efficient, and reliable thanks to its gear-to-gear manual transmission with near-automatic transmission levels, without the CVT belt problems. The five-speed automatic clutch transmission offers ultra-low first gear. The gear changes are very smooth, ensured by a quick cut in fuel and ignition at the appropriate time.
This small-sized vehicle is very maneuverable and weaves its way through the tightest spots. It also offers good stability for a 50-inch wide vehicle.
The build quality is always in line with Honda’s reputation, which could be said to be flawless. Its sturdy construction is apparent, so hard work on the job site won’t be a problem. A new dump body replaces the previous steel rack that was not suitable for the vehicle. It represents the model’s best improvement, and offers numerous tie-down points compatible with the ProConnect system. It can carry 204 kg (450 lbs) of equipment.
What’s new?
Nothing for 2025.
