A major event for Can-Am this year: the time has come to replace the Outlander G2, which have been pounding the trails for more than 10 years, with the new generation, the G3. Redesigning a model that is already dominant in its category is always a challenge for a manufacturer. The engineers have reproduced the development process used for the Outlander 700, and the results are impressive.
The bodywork has features familiar from the Outlander 700, with a high-quality finish. Its wide mudguards and engine protection panels provide excellent defense against splashes. The driving position is high and uncluttered. Note that the seat is one of the most comfortable in its class. In addition, the manufacturer has included storage spaces as standard: a closed, waterproof box in the front luggage rack, a compartment in front of the driver’s seat for a mobile phone with a USB connection and a removable rear box, similar to a toolbox.
To better manage heat dissipation for the occupants, the engines have been placed behind closed side panels. Air is forced towards the rear, thus allowing for efficient heat dissipation. The result is impressive, as no heat is felt in the legs, even during intense driving. In addition, the gear and belt noises that characterized the old Outlander G2 have been considerably reduced. Can-Am has thus corrected the main flaws of the G2 generation: heat and mechanical noise.
The engine is a brand new 999 cm³ V-twin. The 1000R engine develops 101 HP and 69 lb-ft of torque. This is the first time that the 100 HP mark has been crossed for an ATV. The electronic management includes two systems: the intelligent throttle control (ITC) and the intelligent engine braking (iEB). The first allows the responsiveness of the accelerator and the power delivered to be adjusted in three modes: Work, Standard and Sport. The second, an intelligent engine brake management system (iEB), is adjustable to three levels and effectively manages descents.
Power is transmitted to the ground via a continuously variable transmission that operates smoothly and quietly. The four-wheel drive system on the versions is equipped with a disengageable front differential. Finally, the power steering offers three levels of adjustment.
The Outlander 1000R has independent double wishbone suspension on all wheels and a front stabilizer bar. Can-Am has decided to replace the longitudinal arm rear suspension design, which has been present since the first Outlander in 2004. This new suspension offers 10.8 inches of travel at the front and 12 inches at the rear, providing a remarkable ground clearance of almost 12 inches. With the XT-P and MAX Limited versions, you also get FOX 1.5 Podium QS3 gas shocks.
On the trail, the solidity of the chassis is impressive, easily handling the 101 horsepower. The power is undeniably present, and surprisingly, it is deployed in a very fluid manner. You feel that all the power is available, gradually intensifying until it reaches its peak at the end of the rev range. This improves traction and enhances the feeling of control of the mountain bike. Acceleration is striking and pick-up is equally powerful. Regardless of the situation, it behaves in a very playful and sporty manner despite its utility mountain bike base.
The shock absorbers effectively absorb shocks, thanks to optimal calibration. Whether on rocky paths or muddy tracks, ride comfort really stands out as a major asset of the new Outlander. This not only helps reduce fatigue on long rides, but also improves vehicle control.
It should also be noted that the space for the rear passenger is among the most spacious and user-friendly.
- The Outlander 1000R is available in three trim levels in the single-seater version and four levels for the two-passenger MAX.
- The Outlander 1000R DPS and MAX 1000 R DPS are equipped with power steering, the more sophisticated Visko-Lock QE differential and aluminum wheels.
- The Outlander 1000R XT and MAX 1000R XT add a 3500 lb winch, front and rear bumpers, a premium glove box for cell phone and charger, and 26-inch XPS Trail King tires on 14-inch aluminum wheels.
- The Outlander 1000R XT-P and MAX 1000R XT-P add a reinforced radiator, a more sophisticated Visko-4Lok front differential and FOX 1.5 Podium QS3 gas shocks.
- The Outlander MAX Limited 1000R adds to the XT-P: a specific clutch calibration, a 10.25†color LCD dashboard.
